Is a Cubby Bed covered by insurance?
Often, yes — through Medicaid, a Medicaid waiver program, or private insurance. As an authorized Cubby dealer, we walk your family through every step.
The short answer: The Cubby Bed may be covered for children enrolled in Medicaid, a Medicaid waiver program, or private insurance. Approval usually needs two things from your child’s doctor: a prescription and a letter of medical necessity. When Medicaid approves it, many families pay nothing out of pocket.
Who a Cubby Bed is for
Cubby is an enclosed safety bed for children with special needs — for example autism, epilepsy, Down syndrome or cerebral palsy — whose safety is at risk at night. Insurers look for concerns such as:
- Wandering or leaving the bed at night (elopement)
- Climbing out and falling
- Seizures during sleep
- Self-injury or unsafe behavior at night
- Other safety beds or solutions that haven’t worked
What you need from your child’s doctor
- A prescription for a “Cubby Safety Bed (enclosed safety bed).”
- A letter of medical necessity that explains your child’s diagnosis, the specific safety concerns, what you have already tried, and how the Cubby Bed will help.
- Some state Medicaid programs ask for an evaluation from a physical or occupational therapist as well. We’ll tell you if yours does.
A vague or incomplete letter is the most common reason for delays, so we help your doctor get it right the first time using Cubby’s official documentation packet.
What it costs
Coverage depends on your child’s plan. With Medicaid or a Medicaid waiver, approved families often pay $0. With private insurance, your deductible and coinsurance apply. Either way, we confirm your cost before you commit.
